Business Tax Receipts

A Local Business Tax Receipt is required of anyone who maintains a permanent business location or branch office within Bal Harbour Village, for the privilege to engage in or manage a business in the Village.  Failure to obtain a local business tax will result in penalties and fines.  The following procedures are required to obtain a Local Business Tax Receipt:

  1. Contact the Building Department at 305.865.7525, to be certain that the proposed business/occupation you wish to operate is allowed at the address intended. Please review all requirements for your intended business/occupation.
  2. If applicable, obtain approval of the Architectural Review Board (ARB) for any changes to the exterior of a business establishment (painting, signs, canopies, etc.). The Building Department will also assist you with this process.
  3. In addition, any interior and exterior alterations or any remodeling to be done to the proposed place of business requires that you apply for the necessary permits from the Building Department. The permits must be obtained prior to beginning the work.

Once the above conditions have been met, the following application must be completed:

Local Business Tax Application

This form should be filled out and signed by the owner of the business/occupation. The local business tax fee varies by classification. Based on the type of business/occupation additional documents may be requested.

Once the application has been approved your Local Business Tax Receipt will be mailed to you. This process normally takes from one or two weeks.

Once paid the Local Business Tax Receipt must be displayed conspicuously at your place of business and in such a manner as to be open to the view of the public and subject to inspection by all duly authorized officers of the Village.

Renewal

Local Business Tax Receipts must be renewed by September 30 each year and are valid until September 30 of the following year to avoid any additional fees.   A renewal is considered late beginning October 1.  A penalty fee is charged for late renewals, and fines and penalties are issued to businesses that do not obtain a receipt in a timely manner.
