Summary: The police officer performs general police functions in the prevention of crime, protection of life and property, and apprehension of criminal offenders, through the enforcement of laws and ordinances and the maintenance of community order through the performance of numerous human services, as well as providing general information and assistance to the public.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • The police officer is under the direct supervision of a sergeant or officer-in-charge performing a wide variety of police and law enforcement duties including the protection of property, crime detection, and public safety.
  • The officer is responsible for the use of independent judgment in the application of police principles, and knowledge of laws in responding to emergency or difficult situations, and other work as required.
  • Patrolling the streets of the Village on a routine basis in a marked vehicle, all-terrain vehicle, and bicycle or on foot, as assignment dictates.
  • Responding to priority calls regarding public disturbances, criminal, civil, or emergency situations.
  • Direction of activities on site until relieved by competent authority. Providing emergency medical assistance within training, controlling traffic, and otherwise ensuring attention is given to public safety.
  • Assists in controlling crowds.
  • Provides police presence during special events.
  • Detection and prevention of criminal activities by surveillance of assigned residential and beach areas.
  • Notes possible criminal occurrences and take steps to prevent criminal action.
  • Promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating a good rapport with Village residents.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents and assists other officers. Protects evidence, takes testimony from witnesses, and assists detective in specialized investigations.
  • Enforces traffic laws and vehicle codes and promotes traffic safety.
  • Notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and makes arrests as appropriate.
  • Receives and transports property, evidence, and prisoners.
  • Directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, assist motorists, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
  • Investigates crime scenes or accidents; preserves crime scene; protects evidence and takes testimony from witnesses; assists detective in specialized investigations.
  • Completely and accurately prepares a variety of daily and other reports related to crimes, accidents, and other duties. Maintains logs, completes forms, and prepares dispositions and reports as required and in a timely manner.
  • Testifies in criminal courts, depositions, pre-file, and pre-trial conferences.
  • Assist in the safety of public works employees by providing escorts.
  • Provides a variety of related police services.
  • Respond to the public’s general requests for assistance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to comprehend and retain knowledge of various fields relative to the police function, including but not limited to interrogation, criminal law, laws of arrest, search and seizure, rules of evidence and court procedures.
  • Ability to interact and inter-relate with people and help in the resolution of their collective and individual problems.
  • Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively in emergency situations and under little direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, good social and general intelligence, and emotional stability.
  • Ability to read, write and speak in English; other languages helpful. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Willingness to work various shifts and be on 24-hour call.
  • Ability to develop sources of information and referral; and ability to work in a potentially hazardous environment.Education and Experience
  • Have a State of Florida Basic Law Enforcement Certification-active and in good standing.
  • Have completed Basic Law Enforcement Training and received PASSING results in all sections of the State Certification exam.
  • Two (2) years experience in police work, law enforcement and related functions.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.
  • Cannot have any felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories.
  • Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits.
  • Be at least 21 years of age and be a standard high school graduate or its “equivalent” as the term may be determined by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC). Fla. Stat. 943.13 (1) and (3).
  • Be a United States citizen prior to appointment. Fla Stat. 943.13(2). Applicants who are not United States citizens must have applied for citizenship by application closing date.

Essential Physical Skills

  • Physical capability to pass police physical agility entrance tests.
  • Physical capability to run, walk, and climb over rough and unfamiliar terrain, fences and other obstacles.
  • Operate motor vehicle for long periods of time.
  • Subdue persons resisting arrest.
  • Move a disabled or combative individual.
  • Sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact.

Environmental Conditions

  • Moderate noise (business office with computers, telephones, printers, fax machines, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and light traffic)
  • Ability to work within a confined area.
  • Ability to work in a computer station for an extended period.
  • The employee is subject to working in inside and outside environments including extreme hot and cold weather.
  • The employee may be subject to work hazards including loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, and oils.

Supervision Received

  • General Supervision and specific assignments are received from and reviewed by various supervisory level staff.
  • Duties are performed with limited independence requiring the exercise of discretion, sound judgment and initiative.
  • Work is reviewed for compliance with generally accepted operational practices, established departmental policies and standards, and through conversation, observation, analysis of reports, recommendations and results achieved.
