The Village Council selected Mikyoung Kim Design Studio, an internationally acclaimed and award-winning landscape architectural firm, to develop the design concept for this one-of-a-kind resiliency and placemaking public space, which will become the Village’s Harbourfront Park. This visionary project integrates a linear waterfront park with the historic jetty, which is being reconstructed to create a unified, cohesive open space for the enjoyment of both residents and visitors.
As the Village’s only public park, Harbourfront Park will serve as a landmark destination, setting a new standard for innovative waterfront design—one that is truly unique not just in the Village, but possibly worldwide. Beyond its aesthetic and recreational value, this project is also designed with critical environmental resiliency benefits. It elevates the area to enhance user safety while providing additional upland property and beach protection from storm surges, sea-level rise and the powerful waves of Baker’s Haulover Inlet that surround the structure.
Construction of the project is set to begin in 2025, with an anticipated completion in 2027. To ensure continuous public access and maintain emergency pathways, construction will be phased. The first phase will focus on replacing the seawall from the Haulover Bridge to the beach hardpack, which will also involve reconstructing the hardscape to maintain fire access. As construction progresses, the elevation of the cutwalk will be gradually raised toward the end of the structure’s hook, ensuring that the Village’s contractor and project team continue to enhance safety for the community.
The Village’s goal is to deliver a final product that prioritizes environmental resiliency, accessibility, and user safety. This will be achieved through the integration of guardrails, turtle-friendly lighting, and other essential safety and ADA-compliant features. Additionally, the Village, in collaboration with the project team, has been exploring the integration of a unique, one-of-a-kind Living Shoreline along the structure. This feature will provide an educational opportunity while also creating a habitat for relocated coral and other marine life.
