Recreation Supervisor – Full Time

Nature of Work

This position is responsible for performing administrative, supervisory, and professional work in the development and operation of youth, adult, and senior recreation programs for the community, including but not limited to, afterschool programs, camps, special interest programming, and athletics, as well as directing and overseeing the work of office support staff, to provide customer service to residents and guests. The incumbent implements policies and procedures pertaining to the effective and efficient operation of recreation facilities and programs.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Plan, organize, implement, and supervise recreation programs for the Village; recruit, train, and supervise recreation program employees and contracted instructors/vendors.
  • Assist with preparation of vendor contracts for associated recreation programs, ensuring compliance with all policies and regulations.
  • Coordinate activities by scheduling work assignments, promoting teambuilding, ensuring staff provides excellent customer service, and directing the work of subordinate employees, and contracted vendors (for both recreation programming as well as customer service).
  • Conduct staff meetings with assigned staff (including internal employees and contracted vendors); inspect work and recommend employee/vendor actions, including performance improvements and discipline; manage and approve leave requests, payroll and staff scheduling.
  • Assist in researching and developing new techniques, approaches, and trends in recreation programming (to include athletics) and make recommendations to Recreation Manager and/or Department Director.
  • Provide, procure, and/or arrange facilities, material, and equipment for recreation program activities including but not limited to classes, lectures, clubs and other activities. Works closely with other Village employees (Public Works, Capital Projects, Finance, PD, etc.) to coordinate and complete these tasks as needed.
  • Oversees the Village’s online registration platform, ensuring the accuracy of information provided and compliance with established protocols and procedures.
  • Assist with identifying partnership and collaboration opportunities with other organizations and community or interest groups. Assist the Recreation Manager in serving as the Village’s representative in these partnerships and collaborations, when needed.
  • Assist with preparing annual budget estimates, monitoring revenue and expenditures for managed accounts, comprehensive reports and records involving operating achievements, program costs and collection of fees; compile and summarize reports from subordinates.
  • Identify and/or recommend cost control measures in the delivery of all services and functions in his/her area of responsibility.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other employees, and the public using principles of good customer service; promote and represent the Village to the public in a friendly, helpful, and professional manner.
  • Prepare and check documents, records and applications for accuracy and completeness. Assist with maintaining all correspondence related to recreation programs.
  • Ensure compliance with all Village policies and procedures.
  • Perform related work as required, and assist the Department as needed during emergency operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern principles of recreation and athletic programming; effective supervisory and management principles; business mathematics; computerized management systems; training and employee development;
  • Knowledge of modern principles of customer service and delivery of excellent customer service.
  • Some knowledge of accounting principles; methods of handling, receipting, and maintaining records of monies received.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate sound judgment.
  • Ability to demonstrate an awareness of the cultural diversity of the community.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and the general public;
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, to staff, contractors, and the general public.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation, Leisure Services or a related field preferred along with two to four years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training, and/or experience may be considered.
  • Ability to fluently read, write, and communicate in English is required; Spanish as a second language is preferred.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations

  • Certification in CPR/First Aid is required within three (3) months of appointment.
  • Florida Driver’s License required.

Environmental Conditions

  • Must maintain a flexible schedule, working some evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Employee may be required to set up and break down facilities for programs/events, interact with the public, work across departments, and communicate effectively with all parties involved in the execution of programs and activities.

Supervision Received

  • General Supervision and specific assignments are typically received from and reviewed by the Recreation, Arts & Culture Director.
  • Duties are performed with limited independence requiring the exercise of discretion, sound judgment, and initiative.
  • Work is reviewed for compliance with generally accepted operational practices, established departmental policies and standards, and through conversation, observation, analysis of reports, recommendations, and results achieved.

Supervision Exercised

  • Employee will exercise supervisory responsibilities as directed by the Recreation, Arts & Culture Department Director or designee (Recreation Manager).
  • Employee must be able to work independently, exercise discretion, sound judgment, and initiative.
  • Employee will be required to supervise vendors, contractors, and support staff and volunteers.
