Recreation Leader – Part Time

Department: Recreation, Arts & Culture Department

Nature of Work

This is an administrative and operational support position, which will include customer service, recreation programs support, and special events support, all related to the Recreation, Arts & Culture Department.

Illustrative Examples of Essential Duties

  • Answers the telephone, waits on the general public, and provides information related to department and/or Village programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Processes registrations for programs and activities, reviewing documents for completeness, as well as accepting payments, as per department policies and procedures.
  • Types, proofreads, and processes a variety of documents including general correspondence, forms, memos, statistical charts and specialized documents from drafts, notes, or verbal instruction using a computer.
  • Reviews documents for accuracy, completion, and conformance to established procedures.
  • Sorts and files documents and records, maintaining alphabetical, index, and cross-reference files; assists department with photocopying, assembling materials, and simple clerical work.
  • Assists in receiving, sorting, and distributing incoming and outgoing mail; assists in maintaining paper and other supplies stocked; assists in ordering supplies.
  • Assists with or provides program supervision, for various ages including youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Tracks attendance, and ensures that the program is following established policies and procedures.
  • Ensures supervisor is updated orally, or in writing, on all activities and is kept informed of any related issues.
  • Administer first aid, if necessary.
  • May perform facility checks and maintenance as required, i.e. garbage disposal, sweeping, and cleaning up.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with co-workers, other employees, and the public using principles of good customer service; promotes and represents the Village to the public in a friendly, helpful, and professional manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficient knowledge of office practices and procedures including filing and basic record keeping. Proficient knowledge of the operation of standard office equipment including word processing and computer equipment. Proficient knowledge of the English language including vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Proficient knowledge of business letter writing and typing formats. Proficient knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; ability to organize and maintain accurate records and files; ability to learn the operation, policy, and procedures of the Village and the assigned department or office; ability to perform difficult and complex clerical and administrative support work using independent judgment. Ability to effectively present information both one-on-one and in small groups.
  • Ability to work well with children. Excellent customer service skills with the ability to be friendly and courteous at all times when working with children, customers, and staff. Ability to be creative with activities for children. Ability to delegate tasks to assistants. Ability to take direction from supervisory staff.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends on a consistent basis.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent GED required; Associate degree preferred.
  • One (1) year of general customer service.
  • Work Experience in a recreational/educational setting preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted.

Licenses, Certifications and Registrations

  • Customer Service training preferred.
  • American Red Cross CPR AND First Aid Certification is required and must be obtained within 90 days of the date of hire.

Essential Physical Skills

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, see, speak, hear, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, or other electronic devices.
  • Frequently required to walk. See, hear, and talk with the public; read presented documents, write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means.
  • On occasion required to run errands, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, taste, or smell. Intermittently twist and reach; lift or carry weight regularly of 10 pounds and on occasion weight of up to 40 pounds.

Environmental Conditions

  • Moderate noise (business office with computers, telephones, printers, fax machines, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and light traffic).
  • Ability to work within a confined area.
  • Ability to work at a computer station for an extended period.
  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to walk through the facility for inspections, checking various areas, and addressing corrections that can be made under purview.

Supervision Received

  • General Supervision and specific assignments are typically received from and reviewed by the Recreation Manager.
  • Duties are performed with limited independence requiring the exercise of discretion, sound judgment, and initiative.
  • Work is reviewed for compliance with generally accepted operational practices, established departmental policies and standards, and through conversation, observation, analysis of reports, recommendations, and results achieved.
