Community Policing
Our Philosophy
BHPD focuses its activities and resources towards employing a community policing model, which is centered on increasing police visibility through innovative directed patrol activities. The realignment of resources allows the department to provide a greater level of public safety services to residents, businesses and visitors alike. As part of this effort, BHPD initiated several activities to ensure greater visibility and contact with stakeholders. These are as follows:
- Created a new Bicycle Unit;
- Increased Marine Patrol activities;
- Increased patrol on the beach and residential areas on new BHPD golf carts;
- Increased police presence on Collins Avenue;
- Increased traffic enforcement activities throughout the Village; and
- Increased code enforcement within the Commercial and Condo Districts.
Identity Theft and Fraud Prevention
Identity theft happens when someone steals your personal information and uses it without your permission. It’s a serious crime that can wreak havoc with your finances, credit history, and reputation. The State of Florida ranks No. 1 in the U.S. for identity theft. Miami-Dade County along with eight other Florida metropolitan areas lead the nation in identity theft complaints. This crime prevention initiative has increased awareness among Bal Harbour residents around how to protect their personal information, therefore, reducing their risk for identity theft. The initiative has been effective in educating Bal Harbour residents on how to proactively take charge when their identity has been stolen to prevent further damage to their personal and financial reputation.
BHPD’s Investigative Unit conducts Fraud Prevention workshops throughout the year.
